  1. Johnny Rhinestone says:

Come on; you’re not even trying anymore. This is almost as bad as all the photoshop I’ve seen on here lately.

  2. Cheryl in AL says:

I have driven past this sign. Now I can’t remember where. This will drive me crazy until I figure it out.

  3. PsychoDad says:

How long? How long does one idiotic lawsuit take?

  4. 2thfairy says:

Those signs have been around FOREVER!!!

  5. jeff says:

Not really “oddly” specific as I have seen that hitchhiker sign just like this or near every prison I’ve ever driven by. And my job title is “State Prison Drive-Byer”. So there.

  6. I think I saw this sign in southern utah

  7. fish eye no miko says:

I don’t think I’ve EVER seen a prison sign without that sign under it. So… 30+ years ago?

    • Larry Sheldon says:

If “+” is about 40 more.

I see the yellow sign wihought the green one a lot in open territory.

    • Xopher says:

Ditto. Every prison town has these signs.

    • Outback Jon says:

Must be a nice town you live in.

    • Xopher says:

I do, but it’s not a prison town. I have, however, driven past prison towns on the highway.

And by the way, Ossining NY is quite a nice town, despite its being the home of Sing Sing prison. I’m saying that because it’s the only prison town I’ve actually visited.

    • Xopher says:

Sigh. First two words of the above should be “it is,” not “I do.” Duh.

    • Namdren says:

actually, right near the prisons, the crime rate is usually much lower than average, for cities where the prison is actually in town. People tend to worry about escapees getting into their house or something, but: 1, escapees wouldn’t hang around near the prison if they wanted to stay escaped, and 2. escapes are really not that common at all. I believe the prison where I worked had 3 in a 10 year period, with 2 being recaptured within 10 minutes, and one stayed out for a whole 3 hours.
Granted, an inmate on the loose for even 3 hours is really bad… especially if people don’t mind the signs

    • George P says:

I agree. I’ve never driven near a prison and no seen a hitchhiker warning sign.

  8. There are actually laws against picking up hitchhikers that they like to enforce esp around prisons.

Picked up some hitchhikers in Crescent City, near Pelican Bay and was pulled over and given a ticket.

  9. COR VET says:

The sign went up in 1988. It’s located outside Blythe California. There are two prisons there now, Chuckawalla Valley State Prison and Ironwood State Prison. The prisons are 20 miles from town on Intertate 10.

  10. Not a stalker says:

Alright, this signs been posted on this website twice now. It’s because the hitchhiker may be an escaping inmate, and most people know that.

  11. Masha says:

Yeah, ditto on the “this is completely normal.”

  12. JDGadsden says:

See this outside of Jackson MI. Such a common sign that i don’t see why it’s even here.

    • em says:

      I dont get out much…
Signs and posts like these on www is how I interact and see the world.
I love to laugh – both with AND at you !
      “Keep it coming – love…”

  13. wolfpacker14 says:

Yeah, I’m pretty sure they’re everywhere. I saw one of these while passing the Las Vegas prison.

  14. J says:

These signs are all over Michigan too…

    • moosluvr says:

Yep…and from the looks of it, the hitchhiking sign is older than the one proclaiming the State prison.

  15. Joel says:

My wife is certain it was taken on the highway outside Connell, Washington. The landscape certainly looks right, and I think I’ve seen it near there myself.

  16. Mr. Chu says:

Looks like west of Albuquerque NM. Been there and took a little drive. Saw the sign but NO prison.

  17. Peggy v says:

We have these in Texas, no need for photoshopping.

  18. Jenn says:

Ive seen them a dozen times before as well.. I’ve seen them all over the states (Prison towns, and non Prison towns) and i’ve seen them in New South Whales Australia.

  19. Pat W says:

Mental ward in Elgin, IL has the same sign. Been there for at least 25 years.

  20. Anna says:

This isnt photoshopped, there’s that same sign when you drive from Overland Park, KS to Denver CO. Funniest sign ever.

  21. jenidiver says:

Up between Tacoma and Bremerton in Washington State there are signs just like that where the highway goes by the women’s prison.

  22. Dash says:

There are more of these signs in Nevada than there are towns.

  23. Jualie says:

There’s one like this along the highway near Sheridan OR too. But jenidiver – the lady hitchers probably have a much better chance haha. Or I watch too much porn. Who knows.

  24. Capone says:

If a criminal is dumb enough to hitchhike after escaping and a driver dumb enough to pick them up, then they both deserve each other.

  25. Donna Winchester says:

This sign is real and on a major interstate close to a state prison. In fact, there are several of these signs around our state due to proximity of penal institutions to freeways.

  26. Vitaeus says:

Best part about these kinds of signs is that near me they post it on one side of the highway, but not the other

  27. Maritza says:

Seen these around Florence, AZ where there is a prison and detention center. The desert landscape could be here in AZ too. Not a photoshop, sorry to burst your negativity bubble!

  28. Jeem says:

It’s a real sign guys.. I’ve seen it in Arkansas outside the state prison near Grady and Gould. (and that day of course my car broke down almost under the darned sign)

  29. robowarrior says:

There are signs like this along the highway between Delta and Grand Junction in Colorado.

  30. Starr says:

I thought all prison areas had these warnings. Every prison in Illinois has one.

  31. Luc T says:

If I remember right, there’s also signs like that on the Transcanadienne, near the Dorchester Prison.

  32. yeah says:

i’ve seen these signs, also “beware, hitchhikers may be excaped convicts” this is probably real.
