Here at the Quality Inn, we accept citizens from any of our solar system’s planets. But you damn Plutonians better stay the hell away. To Best Western with you!

I’m sure “NO TRAIN NOISE” is intended as a promise, but at first I read it as a prohibition. So…what problem did they have with a guest that led to their putting up that sign?

  2. Linda says:

This sign is in Flagstaff, AZ, where I went to college. You may have heard of Percival Lowell, an astronomer living in Flagstaff in the late 1800s who looked at Mars through his telescopes, saw canals, and declared that there was an intelligent species that must have built them. Those canals turned out to be an optical illusion, but for many years astronomers thought that Mars used to have an advanced civilization living on it. Nowadays Lowell Observatory is famous for being the place where Pluto was discovered, and lots of research on Mars is still done in Flagstaff.

Quality Inn is having a joke that anyone knowing the history of Lowell Observatory will be able to appreciate.

  3. Trey says:

This is in Flagstaff, AZ. I went to college there and went to ask them why they had a permanent sign welcoming Martians. There isn’t really a great story or anything, the owner of the hotel liked a song that had a line to the same effect so he put it on the sign. Strange nonetheless.

  4. Flashing_Monsignor says:

This wouldn’t happen to be in Paramus NJ would it?

    • Flashing_Monsignor says:

“According to my source, the end of the world will be on February 14th, in the year two thousand and sixteen.”

  5. Cohult says:

    Hah, Flagstaff win.

  6. Etta says:

    That’s in Flagstaff!!!

  7. Nick says:

Holy shit! I’ve stayed there. :>

  8. emma says:

Wow! I saw that hotel last time I was in Flagstaff! I took a picture just like this one… I should have expected to see it here!

  9. Rem says:

Lawl! I’ve seen that. Flagstaff AZ comes up with the funniest stuff.

  10. donutmastr says:

I remember that sign…its somewhere in arizona…i wonder if the person who submitted it is who i think they are…

  11. ma_oc says:

What if the martians come by train?

  12. Gangreless says:

    Ha, that’s in Flagstaff, AZ

  13. Sarah says:

I’ve seen a Quality Inn sign that has also said “Martians Welcome”… It’s been almost 6 years and I still haven’t figured out what it means…

  14. Nicole says:

I totally saw this on my way to the Grand Canyon I even took pictures of it never thought to post it!

  15. Corrine says:

HOLY BALLS. I work here. I’m actually here right now. Must show the boss.

  16. dw says:

    Damn you Pluto haters!

  17. madman says:

I’ve actually stayed there! It’s in Flagstaff, AZ.

  18. whooda says:

Holy crap on a stick! Those retched racists. When I catch them I’ll rip their heads off and spit down their necks!

  19. Duke says:

So where can I find a train-noise-friendly hotel?

    • D says:

      Duke –

UUMMM a mile a way by the train track, or really anywhere along route 66 in Flagstaff, Arizona.

    • Xopher says:

Right above Alice’s Restaurant. Walk right in; it’s around the back, just a half a mile from the railroad track.

  20. Matty says:

Strangely enough, this is the Quality Inn in Flagstaff, AZ. Flagstaff is home to the Lowell Observatory which is where Pluto was discovered. The owners think the Alien line is cute and have used it as advertising for years. Gotta love ’em.

  21. LB says:

flagstaff az! i live around there 🙂 my favorite sign in town!

  22. Mr Practical says:

I need the train noise to wake me, my alarm clock is broken

  23. NAUKid says:

I hope those Martians are carrying their papers… AZ doesn’t take kindly to aliens.

  24. katpharm says:

Must be Flagstaff, AZ. Where else would one encounter train noise AND Martians??

  25. Larkspur says:

I love passing that sign everytime I visit Flagstaff.

  26. Tatahatso says:

When you approach Flagstaff from the South, one of the first things you see is the huge white dome over the Northern Arizona University football field… it looks a lot like a flying saucer rising up above the trees. I was convinced that was the reason for the “Martians Welcome” sign until I read the comments about Lowell Observatory.

  27. iyr says:

steal the “i” in noise and then we have a sign

  28. Crumpetbutt says:

    Dude i live there!

  29. Sarah says:

This really looks like a Quality Inn in Roswell, New Mexico. I was just there this past summer, and they have the same sign on that hotel. The whole town is Alien themed (Not surprising) even the Wal-Mart and the KFC. Great town, I miss it already 🙂

  30. Asbduhas says:

I’ve been waiting for someone to put this sign up here! I go to Flagstaff a few times a year and every time I see that sign I can’t help but laugh!

  31. carebeth says:

I go to school in this town. I’m so proud. 🙂

  32. Arjan says:

WOo Flagstaff! There IS no train noise anymore…

  33. HelenaTroy says:

Are those two statements connected? Martians are welcome because thre’s no train noise? Are Martians known to be particularly succeptible to train noises?

Or does it mean that Martiains are welcome unless they *make* train noises?

  34. Ben says:

    Pluto’s a dwarf planet. 0.0

  35. Arjan says:

I think they just mean.. they’re welcome because Flagstaff is known for their astronomy research. After all they discovered Pluto! But the trains that go by no longer make train noise and you supposedly couldn’t hear it from that hotel..

  36. GlowingMonkeys says:

I miss the train noise… they really should bring it back. It was a part of the feel of Flagstaff. I’m pretty sure the two are separate topics. Train noise used to be a big problem for people new to Flagstaff so it was a good selling point.

  37. Jessica says:

Actually, this is in Flagstaff where Pluto was discovered. So there it is still a planet no matter what those pesky scientists say. 😡
